The ODEO Distress Flare is a luminous LED tracking device to be visually located in a distress situation. Its signal emits an internationally recognized morse code light SOS, it indicates that you need urgent help. ODEO Distress Flare offers great autonomy in a distress situation, the red color signal lights up at maximum power for more than 8 hours. Its flicker mimics that of a traditional pyrotechnic hand fire. The latter lights up for about 30 seconds before turning off.
Unlike pyrotechnic fires, electronic visual distress signaling poses no danger to its user, as it does not use explosives and does not produce a flame.
ODEO Distress Flare uses replaceable batteries, high performance alkaline or lithium batteries to power the powerful LED diodes that emit the visual SOS distress signal, covering a wide geographical area extending over several kilometres. The batteries are inserted into the heel of the device, the secure opening of the shutter prevents handling errors during use subject to stress or panic due to the distress situation.
The range of the ODEO Distress Flare electronic visual distress signal depends on the weather conditions of use, in all cases it is visible at more than 3 nautical miles, easily spotted from a helicopter at more than 6 nautical miles and can be located at 10 nautical miles. The signal visible to the naked eye is also optimized for detection with infrared night vision goggles used by the emergency services (use of IR LEDs). The infrared radiation is 830 nm with an intensity of 10mW/sr x 5. The coverage on the horizontal plane is on average 63 candelas and 35 candelas vertically.
The Morse SOS emitted by the ODEO Distress Flare electronic device is recognized as a distress signal in accordance with the international regulations for preventing collisions at sea (RIPAM), also called COLREGS.
Its small size and light weight make the ODEO Distress Flare an ideal device for personal safety. It measures 12.2 cm in height and 6.4 cm in width and its weight with lithium batteries is 150 grams.
The ODEO Distress Flare is waterproof to the IP68 standard and has also been submerged to 100 meters deep. It is also floating in an upright position; light signal out of the water autonomously.
The ODEO Distress Flare operates in a temperature range between -40° and +60° with Lithium batteries. The case is made of a thermoplastic polymer with good shock resistance.
Autonomy of the electronic visual distress signal
The ODEO Distress Flare uses interchangeable batteries available in all supermarkets. It can be used with either 4 L91 Lithium batteries for better performance or 4 Alkaline batteries.
With Lithium batteries, the autonomy is more than 8 hours in full illumination and operates at temperatures between -40°C and +60°C.
With Alkaline batteries the autonomy is more than 3 hours in full illumination and operates at temperatures between -18°C and +55°C.
For marine use, it is recommended that the batteries be changed annually. It is also advisable to keep spare batteries for extended use and thus prolong the transmission of the distress signal.
